The Maitland & District Volunteer Fire Department (MDVFD) was formed in the 1960s by concerned citizens who wanted to bring organized firefighting to the community.

Previous firefighting operations had been carried out by citizens with little or no training and very limited equipment, on the basis of whomever happened to be available when a fire broke out. The first Chief was Albert “Ab” Annand, who still lives adjacent to the fire station and remains supportive of our efforts. The department is located in the Municipality of East Hants ; we're near the outflow of the Shubenacadie River into Cobequid Bay , at the head of the Bay of Fundy . We serve a large, rural area extending from Maitland to Lattie's Brook on Highway 236, and from Urbania to Lower Selma on Highway 215.
We maintain close relations with neighbouring departments in Kennetcook, Noel and Shubenacadie (www.shubiefire.com), including joint training and mutual-aid agreements to increase the apparatus and personnel available at any given call in the four districts.
